New Layout

So Sweet Chickeny Goodness! has been around for a little while and I have done very little with it. I did start to tinker a bit with the layout and the colors. My plan is to play around with it for a while to get it the way that I would like it to be. Not that anyone reads this, but in case they do I am going to try to post a bit more.

Editorial Cartooning

This comic was most definitely not accepted by the school newspaper. The first reason is because my school had a zero tolerance policy toward drugs and alcohol. Until I drew this comic, I did not know that zero tolerance meant no talking or joking about it either. Go figure!
The other reason that this comic was unacceptable for print was because two of the football players had been recently caught drunk doing something stupid. Thus, my making fun of the folly of my fellow students was not a good thing.
I really didn't care that this didn't get published. When I drew it I knew that it would not make the cut. However, thinking back on the situation, I think that the school administration did the school a disservice by sweeping the whole issue under the rug. Their silence on the issue amounted to acceptance. I know other students picked up on that and reacted accordingly.

By the way, all twelve originals are on my flickr site. If you would like, you may now peruse them at your leisure.

High School Comics

While I was attending high school I was asked to draw some comics for the school newspaper. I drew 12 proofs for the first comic that was put in the paper. I showed the proofs to the editor she chose a couple and I redid them and they were then put into the paper. I will put all 12 on my flickr site, but I will choose some of my favorite to put up here.

Pokemon was at its heyday at the time, so I decided to play on popular culture at the time. Yeah, I know that it seems dumb now! There were kids at my high school who would have said that they were above, and yet they still liked it. I was not as much into the drawing back then. I put more effort into the wit. I think that I liked the contrast of bad drawing with the off the wall humor. Maybe I just say that because I can't draw.

[Ominous intro music]

Look out kids! Old man Kugemeister's rabid dog, Pierre, is on the loose and searching for a tasty morsel! We had better throw little Timmy down the well, because we aren't sure if he we make it any other way!
Well maybe not that ominous, but it is imperative that sensationalize. I am the proud owner of a flatbed scanner. Previously, I would have to travel to my father-in-law's house, which, when translated, means that I could only really scan things on the weekends. Now that I have the power, I can scan pictures, drawings, or, dare I say, unmentionable body parts (just kidding) at my leisure.
And thus, THE PLAN was born.
I am going to scan in some old comics and doodles that I keep around, and I am going to post those. That will give me some time to create some new stuff for all to enjoy.

AHHHHH, Dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs

These are terrible beasts that ruled the earth once upon a time, or so we are told by the Discovery Chanel. I was enthralled by them when I was a wee lad. So when I was asked by my sister to draw her some dinosaur pictures. I sat down and these are the preliminary sketches that I came up with.
What struck me once I was done was that these dinosaurs that I drew were the 'popular' dinosaurs. You know there are only certain dinosaurs that we know and love because they capture our imagination. T-Rex is the king of dinosaurs. Raptors were popularized by Jurassic Park. Brontosaurus are the gentle dinosaurs. Then there is ever present 'Mr. Death From the Sky Himself' Pterodactyl. Once I thought of that I added the one in the bottom left corner. If you can't read the caption it reads, "No one remembers Chickenasaurs." That is a true statement if there ever was one.

Alternative holiday greetings

Saint V

I grow weary of the watered down emotional drivel that passes for sentiment in the card industry. To this effect I will make my own cards from time to time. This Valentine's Day I was industrious and I came out with a Saint Valentine's Day Massacre card.
I had been joking with my wife that the it was the best holiday based on a mafia hit. She reminded me that the holiday had been in existence long before the infamous Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Oh well.
I gave her the card, she liked it, and she took it to work, but then the realization hit her that the card would take a lot of explaining if she just had it pinned up in her office. It is chilling at our house. We both like it.
